Joy – “A giddy, confounding, recklessly brilliant fairy tale of self-empowerment, fuelled by the redemptive magic of the movies….” The Daily Telegraph
On the face of it, it may not seem that a (true) story of a young woman, who invents a new kind of mop (yes that’s right, for cleaning floors) and then manages to sell it and become very rich, would make a delightful multi award winning film. But in the hands of eccentric and innovative director David O. Russell anything is possible. He once again pairs the hugely talented Jennifer Lawrence with the manly and handsome Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) in a joyous film that will have you smiling with pleasure (and some tears along the way) and finally cheering the outcome. Robert De Niro is better than of late in a blue collar role.
In many ways, despite the novel and original methods of David O. Russell, this is a very old fashioned film which confronts the ‘American Dream’ saying that unerring ambition and self belief, though essential, are not by themselves enough because we all need ‘a little help from our friends’ (and family). John Crome
