Emma Thompson is fast becoming a national treasure to compare with Dame Judy and Dame Maggie. She is, of course, a superb and very clever actress which she fully proves in this delightful film. She plays the author of the book ‘Mary Poppins’, P L Travers, who come into hilarious conflict with Hollywood giant Walt Disney, who wants to make a film of the children’s masterpiece…but his way. Emma Thompson’s gift for exquisite comic timing is wonderfully exploited as the snobbish and excruciatingly English author (that despite her true Australian outback origins) who pitches up against the unyielding but avuncular Walt Disney (the always reliable Tom Hanks, last seen in Rockbourne as Captain Phillips), as he tries to persuade her to take the money and let him get on with making the film. The Sherman brothers, the composers of the wonderful songs in the film, try to pour more than ‘a spoonful of sugar’ to ‘make the medicine go down’… but to no avail…Travers is unbending until, of course, needing the money, she agrees.
A sweet (very) movie to cheer us up, a film to just sit back and enjoy ‘in a most delightful way’.
