The rise to success of P.T. Barnum…with songs.
Rather like Mamma Mia, when The Greatest Showman opened last year the critics were ‘mixed’, but the audiences loved it and it went on to unexpectedly be one of the greatest hit movies of all time. That may be mainly due to the star quality of Hugh Jackman (everyone’s favourite ‘X’ Man ‘Wolverine’, and Valjean in Les Misérables) as Barnum. However, we are also treated to the teen appeal of Zac Efron, the stellar Michelle Williams (Marilyn Munroe in ‘My Week with Marilyn’), Zendaya, a massive online star, and Rebecca Ferguson (a very affecting Elizabeth Woodville in ‘The White Queen’ on TV) who plays Jenny Lind ‘The Swedish Nightingale’ – the most successful opera singer of her day. That was the key to P.T.’s phenomenal success: he gave the public what they wanted, or at least what he thought they wanted, from Tom Thumb to Jumbo the elephant and ‘the bearded lady’.The film tells of his early struggle and eventual triumph.
Set in the late 19th century world of American circuses, this is a razzmatazz, all singing all dancing middle of the road family movie with universal appeal. Whatever you think about musical films, the circus or light entertainment you are bound to enjoy The Greatest Showman…after all ‘why wouldn’t you’?
