The critics say:
‘It’s the type of movie that is charming for the soul and makes your brain happy in the process; it’s a heartfelt and well-written experience that will appeal to everyone’
‘Funny, touching, sweet and drenched in ’60s nostalgia, but reverberating with distant, haunting echoes of adolescent longing for practically anyone who grew up anytime, anyplace, anywhere’.
‘….it’s a masterpiece and the best film to come out so far this year.’
This time our film is from America, but it does feature our own stellar diva Tilda Swinton, together with an amazing cast: Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Harvey Keitel play the adults who try to keep ‘unpopular’ twelve year-olds Suzy and Sam apart when they plot to run away on the idyllic New England Island where they are attending Scout summer camp in the 1960s – bringing back memories for many of happy times on Brownsea Island.
Sam brings the camping equipment and Suzy brings… her cat…and a record player…and some books. They dance on the beach to the sounds of Françoise Hardy and their innocent romance blossoms. They are found and are confronted by parents, the law, and panoply of confused and hostile adults.
The imaginative use of music, from such varied sources as Benjamin Britten and Hank Williams, is a notable feature of this wonderful film. Be prepared for surprises.
