Released in November 2021, Belfast is the humorous, tender and intensely personal story of one boy’s childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in Belfast.
BELFAST, August 1969. Surrounded by sporadic violence and growing danger, nine year old Buddy finds himself confronted with the ugly reality of sectarian conflict. As the suffocating stranglehold of increasing turmoil tightens around his once-peaceful working class neighbourhood, Buddy tries his best to understand The Troubles – after all someone must be responsible for forcing people to flee their homes. Buddy’s family must come face to face with a nearly impossible, life altering decision – stay or start packing?
There is huge warmth in Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographical movie about the Belfast of his childhood. Beautifully acted and with emotional generosity and wit it tackles a dilemma of the times not often understood. The film moves with an easy swing from home to street to schoolroom to pub and back home and is perhaps richest when nothing specifically tragic or Troubles-related is happening. With no less than seven Oscar nominations Kenneth Branagh won the award for best original screenplay.
An impressive 92% score from audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes – this film is not to be missed.
