Steven Spielberg proves once again that he is a masterful story-teller, with this ‘nail-biter’ of a movie set at the height of the cold war. Tom Hanks is a decent middle of the road lawyer, Donovan, brought in by the CIA to defend a recently arrested Soviet Spy because ‘somebody has to’. British Shakespearian Mark Rylance has just won the Oscar for his extraordinary performance as the spy Abel. “What’s the next move when you don’t even know what the game is?” Abel asks Donovan. But in this film working out the next move is the game, and one that Spielberg plays like a grand master; without recourse to violence, explosions or sex. Local writer Mat Charman interweaves true events – the shooting down and capture of US spy Gary Powers in the U-2 aeroplane – with brilliantly contrived Hitchcock-like tension. This is grown-up, extremely well crafted, superior entertainment. Don’t miss it. John Crome
