Daphne du Maurier’s 1951 best-seller has been filmed several times before, as well as having a long life as a stage play where it is a stalwart of the repertory and ‘amdram’ circuit. But director Roger Mitchell (Notting Hill), having the opportunity to cast the wonderful and gorgeous Rachel Weisz in the title role, proves that you can never have too much of a good yarn.
Set in 19th century Cornwall, a young Englishman Philip (Sam Claflin – Hunger Games) has recently inherited a large estate from his much-loved guardian and benefactor. He receives a visit from his late guardian’s mysterious, beautiful widow Rachel, played by Rachel Weisz. He becomes besotted and captivated by her despite the fact that the lovely young Louise (Holliday Grainger), daughter of the family lawyer, is in love with him. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself suspecting that Rachel murdered his guardian.
All the superb cast is British. As you would expect from a Daphne Du Maurier tale of mystery and suspense, the plot twists and turns, in a very satisfying way. ‘Did she, or didn’t she?’ John Crome
