“JK Rowling’s spectacular feat of world-building” – The Telegraph (4*)
“JK Rowling goes steampunk …. a wonderfully enjoyable adventure” – The Guardian (5*)
“And now for something completely different…” – DG
Director David Yates and author JK Rowling turn the clock back 70 years from the adventures of Harry Potter to the time of Newt Scamander, the always reliable and very likeable Eddie Redmayne who, holding a mysterious leather suitcase, visits New York in the 1920s. It appears that it was Newt’s book about wizardry that inspired the young Harry at Hogwarts. Inside the case is a wild array of diverse magical creatures.
JK Rowling does not let us down with this latest fantastical story. The special effects, CGI (computer-generated images for those not in the know!) and creature animatronics are the best ever and you will be astonished and impressed. This is not entirely a children’s film, but director David Yates does ask us all to find our inner child and accept a world of wizards, magic, and phantasmagorical goings on. Frankly the plot is too complicated and daft to précis here, so give it up and relax in a ‘world of true imagination’. John Crome
