Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of prosecco
Quite often we find it difficult to find a film that we think is both worthwhile and that will appeal to our Rockbourne audience. But there were no such qualms when choosing Fisherman’s Friends for our first film of the autumn season. This is a warm-hearted, uplifting, and very funny comedy based on a true story.
Danny, (the always terrific Daniel Mays) is a brash and cocky recording manager for the mega music company Universal Records. As a wind-up and to bring him down a peg or two, his boss Troy (Noel Clarke) gets him to sign up Fisherman’s Friends, a Cornish sea-shanty-singing amateur ten-man choir. Danny falls in love with them, completely unaware that Troy’s instruction was never serious. However, the album that Danny produces becomes a surprise top-ten hit.
A laugh a minute, lovely and familiar songs, Cornish scenery and some well-loved British character actors, including James Purefoy and David Hayman, make this film a not to-be-missed, delight.
