For the first film of the new season of Rockbourne film nights, we take you back to 1946, in the aftermath of the war, and to Guernsey in the Channel Islands which were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by the Germans. This is a charming and delightfully light romantic drama with an intriguing mystery at its heart.
This past was not a foreign country where ‘they did things differently then’ but a very potent example of the inexecrable advance of the Nazi war machine, which at the time was barely referred to by the British Government for fear of denting the morale of the people in the UK. Of course, the Nazis presented a terrible fate for those in the Channel Islands who were sent to slave labour camps, and to the few Jews who lived there and were mostly murdered. However, Mike Newell’s film is as light and positive as was his ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’.
A group of ‘Downton Abbey’ alumni, the radiant Lily James, the dashingly handsome Matthew Goode, the serene Jessica Brown Findlay, aided by the ubiquitous Michiel Huisman from ‘Game of Thrones’ and some of the greatest vintage British character actors including Penelope Wilton and Tom Courtenay, bring to life the surprising best-selling novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
Lily James plays the free-spirited writer who forms a life changing bond with the eccentric book club that was formed during the occupation. The film is produced by the sure-footed makers of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. With an all-star cast, this is a natural ‘must see’ for Rockbourne. John Crome
