“Maggie Smith is a tottering, staggering force of nature in this cherishable adaptation of Alan Bennett’s beloved play” – Daily Telegraph

Not one but two ‘national treasures’, Maggie Smith and Alan Bennett make this delightful and thought – provoking movie an ideal choice for Rockbourne Film Night. Nicolas Hytner directs his third adaptation of a Bennett play, after The Madness of King George and The History Boys. The story is familiar and ‘mostly true’: an indigent old lady, Mary Shepherd (Maggie), parked her dilapidated clapped-out dormobile in Bennett’s driveway in affluent Camden Town. Bennett, here beautifully interpreted by Alex Jennings, gives us all a lesson in compassion towards those less fortunate. Mary is less than grateful, being irascible, dotty and very smelly. Equipped with some of Bennett’s funniest one-liners she stayed for fifteen years, claiming that the Virgin Mary – whom she had met on Camden High Street – told her to. A clever, witty, and sometimes very touching film, you will all feel better for having seen it.
