All of Jane Austen’s most famous works have been filmed, several times over, resulting in some of the best and most popular movies ever made. So it is with great pleasure that Rockbourne Film Night is able to introduce you to ‘Love and Friendship’, a screen adaptation of Austen’s lesser known novella ‘Lady Susan’. Although the adaptor and film director Whit Stillman is an American, and the fantastic cast ‘international’, and the story, set in Hampshire, is filmed in Ireland, this is the most English costume drama you will ever see. Many of the familiar Jane Austen tropes are here: the pushy mother, Lady Susan (a fantastic performance from Kate Beckinsale), is trying to find a new husband for herself and at the same time to marry off her reluctant daughter. Life in the country houses of Hampshire is treated with the wit and delicious disdain so familiar to Jane Austen readers, who will not be disappointed with this clever, gentle, and wryly amusing film. Handsome Australian actor Xavier Samuel is suitably dashing, Cloë Sevigny is suitably lovely, and there is a delicious cameo from Stephen Fry. An uncomplicated delight of a film. John Crome
