Maggie Smith has somewhat cornered the market in grumpy, posh old ladies, and here in American playwright Israel Horowitz’s adaptation of his long running Broadway play she is at her irascible best. When drunken American lay-about Mathias, brilliantly played by Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda), turns up to claim the flat left to him in the Marais district of Paris by his late and estranged father, he finds that Mathilde Gold ( Maggie Smith) is ensconced and irremovable thanks to a French law that favours sitting tenants over possible spare rooms. A further complication arises because her daughter Chloë, played by Kristin Scott Thomas- still the most beautiful actress on the screen- will not budge either. So a funny and touching ménage a trios, full of twists and turns, is at the centre of this delightful film.
