I think we can safely conclude that there is nothing that we Brits love more than a talking bear. But Rupert, and even Pooh will have to step aside for the champion and most loved Paddington Bear. Not only the Peruvian illegal immigrant, but the whole Brown family are loveable, positive role models in a turbulent and uncaring world. Paddington, voiced by the brilliant Ben Wishaw (I hope it is not too much of a spoiler to tell you that Paddington is a stuffed toy), is now happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens and is a popular member of the local community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes.
While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s (Imelda Staunton) 100th birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr Gruber’s antique shop and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it is up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief.
Can you imagine two better surrogate parents for a displaced Peruvian bear (albeit one stuffed with straw) than Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville as the Browns? Perhaps I need to say that this not exclusively a children’s film, but children of all ages 0-90 are welcome. Whatever your mood, Paddington 2 will lighten it.
