‘Red Joan’ is adapted from Jennie Rooney’s 2013 novel of the same name, inspired by the real-life case of Melita Norwood, the scientific researcher who was in 1999 unmasked as a former Soviet spy.

Out of the blue, a respectable suburban old lady called Joan (Judy Dench) receives a visit from the Special Branch, is arrested for breaching the Official Secrets Act and taken away for questioning.

The questioning triggers extended flashback sequences to Joan as a super-bright Cambridge University physics graduate, interspersed with returns to the older Joan’s interrogation. The young Joan (Sophie Cookson), idealistic, delectable and naïve, is dazzled by worldly, sophisticated student Sonja (Tereza Srbova). Sonja is a member of an anti-war group of idealistic communist sympathisers worried about the possibility of nuclear war. Through this group Joan meets Leo (Tom Hughes), a highly active sympathiser, with whom she has a brief fling. She is later recruited to work in a secret atomic research facility and works as PA to an attractive older professor Max (Stephen Campbell Moore).

The rest, we leave until October 16th….
