A smart, supremely watchable and entertaining film, and Close gives a wonderful star turn.”
– Marc Kermode, The Guardian

After enjoying a ‘duke box’ movie (Mamma Mia 2) and a spooky ghost story (The Little Stranger) we can now sit back and enjoy a rather serious (but very entertaining) and more mature film starring the ever-magnificent Glenn Close. Nominated for this year’s ‘Oscar’ having already won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards of 2019 for her superlative performance in The Wife, Glenn Close is near to perfection as the self-effacing spouse of a Nobel prize winning author, played by the always reliable British actor Jonathan Pryce. They are In Stockholm to receive the prize, when internal tensions and bad behaviour surface. Christian Slater is at his oily best as an unreliable juror who muddies the water and just makes things worse.

After nearly forty years of marriage, Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) have, in the past, complemented each other effectively. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man’s Wife. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage thirty-plus years later – a lifetime of shared compromises, secrets, betrayals and mutual love, culminating in a third act revelation, which, although anticipated, is still an elegant shock.                                                                                                John Crome
