Dame Judy Dench as Queen Victoria (again): what more could Rockbourne film night’s regulars ask for? With all the ingredients for an exceptional evening out, Victoria and Abdul ticks all the boxes. Firstly, it is a true(ish) story of how the grumpy 69-year-old Queen fell for her Indian servant Abdul, in the face of opposition from her family and the government. The ‘Mother of the Empire’ nevertheless remained a staunch and intimate friend to the young clerk. Secondly, it is the latest film by Stephen Frears whose Philomena and Florence Foster Jenkins were such successes for Rockbourne film night. Abdul is played by Ali Fazal, a major young star in Bollywood films, and there is a delightful cameo from Eddie Izzard as Bertie, the Prince of Wales.
Those with a historical perspective may think that much of the film is pure tosh – but will, despite that, thoroughly enjoy Dame Judy’s superb performance, and the optimistic nature of the film. John Crome
