TAMARA DREWE – Wednesday 19th October 2011 at 7.30pm
A salacious romp set and filmed in Dorset. Tamara, a leggy journalist, returns to her sleepy home village where she creates mayhem with local characters who seem to be based on a cross between The Archers and Thomas Hardy.
An adaptation of a graphic novel by Posy Simmonds, it stars Gemma Arterton as a young writer who returns to her home village of Ewedown a transformed woman. She has a newspaper column and new nose. Everyone thinks she’s gorgeous: her teenage sweetheart and current handyman Andy Cobb (Andy Evans), rock-star drummer Ben Sergeant (Dominic Cooper), with whom she shacks up, a lascivious crime-writer, Nicholas Hardiment (Roger Allam). Everywhere she goes she can’t help but trigger testosterone trouble.
The causes collateral mayhem, too. For Beth (Tamsin Greig), Hardiment’s long-suffering wife. For Glen McGreavy (Bill Camp), an American scholar, who’s been labouring for years on a critical study of Hardy – he’s hopelessly in love with Beth. For Jody (Jessica Barden) and Casey (Charlotte Christie), bored teenagers who chuck eggs at passing motorists and who are aghast that Ben is being bedded by a rival. Review extract from The Telegraph.
